We’re delighted to have advised Tony Bloom, majority owner and Chairman of English Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion, on his recent acquisition of a minority shareholding in Melbourne Victory FC, a football club competing in the Australian A-League.

The agreement sees Mr Bloom become a 19.1% shareholder, with an ability to increase his shareholding in the future.

Commenting on the deal, Mr Bloom said: “As a passionate football supporter, I am excited to have the opportunity to become a shareholder in Melbourne Victory, one of the most successful clubs in A-League history.”

Melbourne Victory FC Chairman, John Dovaston stated: “We are extremely excited to bring someone of Tony’s calibre not only into Melbourne Victory, but of course, into the A-League. Tony’s wealth of experience and expertise in football is well recognised, with Brighton & Hove Albion being widely regarded as one of the best-run teams in the EPL.”

The Wiggin team was led by Head of Sports and Partner, David Hinchliffe and Legal Director, Christian Slinger, who were primarily supported by Tim Howden and Shaney Stevens-Neale along with assistance from Entertainment Finance Partner, Chris Hanson.

Mr Bloom added, “I would like to add my thanks to both transaction teams in getting this deal over the line so quickly. Special thanks to David, Christian, Tim and Shaney at Wiggin for all of their hard work and guidance on this one.”

David Hinchliffe, Head of Sport at Wiggin, commented: “We are really pleased to have assisted Tony and his team on this investment and are excited to watch Melbourne Victory’s progress (albeit from the other side of the world!).

I think we are going to see a significant increase in multi-club ownership models over the next few years, and this is an area in which we have extensive experience. We have built up a global network of contacts in this space and are well equipped to advise on investments and acquisitions across all major leagues.”
