Our environmental commitments

Our goal is to measure and reduce the environmental effect of our operations, promote sustainability in the legal sector and support our staff to make positive environmental choices.

In light of the climate emergency, Wiggin’s sustainability strategy focuses on making informed and responsible business decisions to help reduce our environmental impact. We’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint through a combination of energy efficiency measures, renewable electricity, operational improvements and responsible business practices.

We currently offset our carbon emissions at the end of each financial year to cover Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions, while continuing to identify opportunities to reduce emissions at source.

Reducing our environmental impact

Our London office at Space House is part of a retrofit development with significant sustainability credentials. By retaining 90% of the original structure, the redevelopment is estimated to have saved around 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and delivers net zero operational carbon, an EPC A rating and a BREEAM Outstanding rating.

Space House has been described by Historic England as “one of the most important redevelopment projects of our time”.

Energy efficiency is a priority across our offices. Measures include LED lighting, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting technology and other initiatives designed to reduce energy consumption. Our website is hosted by a provider that uses 100% renewable electricity generated from wind power.

Environmental considerations inform our procurement and supplier relationships. Where possible, we choose suppliers and partners that demonstrate strong environmental credentials, responsible sourcing practices, waste reduction initiatives and carbon-reduction commitments. This includes using recycled and refillable office products, sustainable catering providers and local suppliers where appropriate. We encourage lower-carbon choices when travelling for work and use travel providers that share our sustainability ambitions.

Building a more sustainable future

Sustainability extends beyond carbon reporting. Our sustainability committee, made up of volunteers from across the business, encourages colleagues to reduce waste, reuse resources and support environmental initiatives throughout the year – from beach clean-up days with the Marine Conservation Society, to running book and clothes swap events in our offices.

Wiggin also looks for opportunities to promote and advocate for sustainability issues externally and has been a Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA) member firm since 2016.
