Insights Government announces acceleration of major consumer and competition reforms

In its recent Autumn Statement, the UK Government has announced that it is accelerating the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill, which (among other major reforms) will bring in wide-ranging changes to UK consumer law.

 These changes include:

  • Significantly enhanced enforcement powers for breaches of consumer law through the introduction of an ‘administrative model’ of enforcement and substantial fining powers of up to 10% of global turnover; and
  • Changes to consumer laws to tackle so-called ‘subscription traps’ and the use of fake reviews online.

While no specific date has been set, the accelerated timetable means we could see the publication of the Bill within the next few weeks, with enactment likely now taking place during the course of next year.
