HomeNewsWiggin advises The Overlap on the sale of a majority stake to Global

Our corporate team has advised The Overlap, one of the UK’s leading sports entertainment brands, on Global’s acquisition of a majority stake in the company. Under the terms of the deal, The Overlap will join Global Studios as part of its newly launched Sport by Global division, which focuses on video-first podcasts and branded entertainment.

The Overlap is the rapidly growing sports media platform founded by Gary Neville and Scott Melvin in 2021. The company has established itself as one of the UK’s most popular football content channels with more than 38m monthly views on YouTube and 2.2bn views across all platforms in 2025.

Commenting on the deal, Neville said: “The Overlap started as an idea that we thought people might like and we went for it. What has happened since then has been a great journey and it’s a team that I love working with and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of. We see huge growth potential for The Overlap and are delighted to have found the perfect partner in Global to power us forward and create The Overlap Network with the aim of becoming a world-leading football and sports media platform.”

Ben Whitelock, who led the deal, commented: “We are delighted to have advised The Overlap on this transformative transaction. This deal represents an exciting new chapter for Gary, Scott and the team, and provides the perfect platform for The Overlap to realise its ambition of building a multi-format sports media network. We wish them every success in this next phase of growth with Global.”

Ben was supported on the deal by Ben Headicar, Stephanie Burns and Christina Themistocli.
