Retained EU law is EU law that was retained on the statute book as a bridging measure to make it easier for the UK to leave the EU and to ensure certainty. The Government is now keen that such “outdated” EU law is reformed, repealed and replaced, but is concerned that under current laws, to do so would take several years because of the need for primary legislation for many of the changes.

Accordingly, it has announced that it will bring forward new legislation to ensure that changes can be made more easily. The Bill is also expected to end the precedence that EU law has in the UK’s domestic legal framework.

Officials across government are currently reviewing all EU retained laws to determine if they are beneficial to the UK. The Government says that it will make the review public in due course. To read the Government’s press release in full, click here.
