The Government has announced the creation of a new ‘AI Taskforce’ to be chaired by Lord Vallance, the latest move to place AI “at the very centre of Government” following the creation of the Cabinet post of Minister for AI.
According to the Government’s press release, the Taskforce will seek to deliver the Prime Minister’s AI agenda by, among other things, exploring how AI can transform public services, encouraging greater adoption of AI by the public sector, and considering how AI can help boost economic growth. The latter has been a familiar theme of government policy in recent years and will complement Lord Vallance’s role as Chair of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor.
In its structure and approach, the Taskforce will also seek to learn lessons from initiatives such as the Vaccines Taskforce, which the Government says demonstrated that “an empowered unit, with clear accountability to the Prime Minister, can drive extraordinary outcomes and deliver real benefits for people across the country”.
