HomeInsightsCompetition and Markets Authority publishes Google’s first quarterly report on its commitments in relation to “Privacy Sandbox” browser changes

On 16 May 2022, Google provided the CMA with its first report on its compliance with the binding commitments accepted by the CMA on 11 February 2022. The report covers the period from 11 February 2022 to 11 May 2022.

Under the commitments, Google is required to report on the progress of the Privacy Sandbox proposals, updated timing expectations, its interactions with the CMA and third parties, including on the testing of proposals, as well as the approach taken to address concerns raised. The CMA has published the full report to inform third parties of developments on the Privacy Sandbox and progress in implementing the commitments. The commitments put in place a framework within which Google will develop and test the Privacy Sandbox proposals.

Google says that its first quarterly report sets out updated timing expectations, substantive explanations of how it has considered observations made by third parties, and a summary of the interactions between the CMA and Google, including a record of any concerns raised or comments made by the CMA and the approach retained for addressing such concerns or comments.

The CMA says that it is continuing to engage with Google on the design and development of the proposals. The ICO has also been closely involved, given that the aim is to ensure that both competition and privacy are protected. For a link to the full quarterly report, click here.
