Bethany is an associate in the data protection team.
“I advise on all aspects of data protection and privacy, whether that’s setting up data governance, launching a new AI or tech project, or dealing with the ICO. Much of my work is on the contentious side: difficult DSARs, complaints and regulatory enquiries. Before focusing purely on data protection, I worked on privacy litigation including RTM v Bonne Terre & Hestview and Noel Clarke v The Guardian. Having seen how these disputes play out in court, I can help clients deal with problems early, before they get that far.
Most of my clients are in media, technology and other regulated sectors, where data protection rarely sits on its own and has to work alongside other rules. Understanding how those regimes fit together means I can give advice that works across the board, not just on the privacy point in isolation.
I’ve also spent time on secondment to a music rights organisation, working solely on data protection, and to a Premier League football club, where I supported the in-house team on a range of matters, including data protection. Working inside those businesses gave me a clearer sense of what in-house lawyers actually need from external advisers.
I trained at Wiggin, spending time across the firm’s key practice areas and sectors. That gave me a broad grounding in the commercial and legal issues our clients deal with beyond data protection. Since then, I’ve specialised in privacy and qualified as a PDP Data Protection Practitioner in 2023. Outside work I’m a musician, which helps me understand many of the creative businesses I work with.”
