Insights Dynamic Pricing: Private Members’ Bill introduced to introduce greater transparency

A Private Members’ Bill has been introduced to Parliament which seeks to address the issue of dynamic pricing in ticket sales that received so much attention when Oasis announced its reunion tour (and prompted an investigation into Ticketmaster by the Competition and Markets Authority, on which we commented here).

The ‘Sale of Tickets (Sporting and Cultural Events) Bill’ was introduced by Rupa Huq, one of the 20 MPs selected in the Private Members’ Bill ballot. While the text of her proposed Bill is yet to be published, she has stated that it will not outlaw dynamic pricing, but instead “introduce transparency and certainty” by, for example, mandating that ticket sellers state at the outset the maximum price for which a ticket could sell.

The Bill will be debated at Second Reading on 6 December 2024. In the meantime, the Government’s consultation on the secondary ticket market – which will include examining the practice of dynamic pricing – is expected to be published this autumn.
